Teletouch is an interdisciplinary research project combining architecture, telematics, haptics, computer science, and interactive arts. The project consists of a pair of walls in different spaces, augmented by interfaces resembling pin-art toys. Each wall is linked to the other, allowing them to transfer shaped forces and deform the boundary between two spaces. Traditional telematics communication utilizes video and sound, but touch is generally ignored. Using this interface, the participants will be able to improvise haptic and visual patterns through the pins, blurring the border between the two spaces and stimulating new modes of telecommunication. While architecture explores the thresholds between physically proximate conditions, Teletouch extends this notion to non-local co-located conditions. The hardware behind the interface is based on a grid of small tactile pixels, driven by small linear shaft motors. Teletouch will initially bridge two sides of a university campus, and later bridge two different countries.
